CE 011 - Introduction to Civil Engineering Design

Catalog Description:  
Provides an introduction to civil engineering facilities and systems (environmental, structural, transportation and water resources), environmental impacts of those systems, historical development of design, introduction to design concepts and procedures, examples of the design of civil engineering systems, creativity in design, and applications in civil engineering design-horizontal curves, vertical curves, earthwork, state plane coordinates, geographic information systems and global positioning systems.  2.0 hours discussion, 3.0 hours laboratory. Formerly CE 001B.

Prerequisites:
CE 010

Textbook and Other Required Materials:
  • Elementary Surveying, An Introduction to Geomatics, 10th Edition, by Paul R. Wolf and Charles D. Ghilani, published by Prentice-Hall, Inc. copyright 2002
  • Ownership and use of a scientific calculator is required
  • Surveying Field Book
  • Zip diskette, 100MB or 250MB
  • Engineers scale and architects scale
Course Objectives:
The objectives of this course are as follows:
  •  Introduce design concepts, procedures, creativity in design, and applications in civil engineering design.
  • Design a vehicle access alignment with consideration for horizontal curves, vertical curves, earthwork and environmental impact.
  • Develop of a digital terrain model on the computer for use in all aspects of the design project, including design of horizontal and vertical alignment, development of design plans, and generation of radial stakeout data.
  • Experience team activities that take full advantage of an individual's experience with design and combines team participation in decision processes.
  • Identify, formulate and solve engineering problems given some direction in identifying an engineering problem.
  • Discuss failures, successes and how to approach engineering design along with professional and ethical responsibilities in engineering.
  • Familiarity with field surveying techniques, calculations and skills using modern surveying equipment such as a Total Station survey instruments and global positioning system.
Outcomes:
Students completing the course will have:
  • Awareness of civil engineering design specifications, concepts, environmental impacts and field procedures.
  • Individual experience with computer use as it applies to digital terrain modeling and design.
  • Familiarity with group interactions to determine selection of civil engineering design projects.
  • Professional and ethical responsibility as it applies to public safety and comfort.
  • Practice surveying procedures for a variety of engineering tasks as it pertains to field activities.
  • Knowledge of information resources, calculations and office procedures to successfully complete a design project.
Lecture and Laboratory Schedule:
Lecture  Two meetings per week for 50-minutes each
Laboratory  One meeting per week for 2-hours and 50-minutes
     -  30 to 50 minutes laboratory presentation and discussion
     -  Remaining laboratory time for field/computer work and computations

Contribution of Course to Meet the Professional Component:
As a prelude to Civil Engineering, this course introduces:
  • Professional Engineers Act and Professional Land Surveyors Act.
  • Equipment and techniques used in data collection and field staking.
  • Computer applications in terrain modeling and drawing.
  • Professional and ethical responsibilities in engineering.
  • Highway design standards.
Assessment:
The following evaluations compose the course letter grade:
  • Homework assignments are all collected and graded; resubmittals are permitted for 90-percent grade value; weighted 15 percent of course grade.
  • Two 50-minute midterm examinations, each weighted 15 percent of course grade.
  • One 1-hour, 50-minute comprehensive final examination, weighted 20 percent of course grade.
  • Laboratory assignments weighted 35 percent of course grade with emphasis on a design project.
Letter grades are assigned based on the following:

     Score (%) / Grade
     89 -100  =  A
     79 - 88   =  B
     65 - 78   =  C
     50 - 64   =  D
      0 - 49   =  F
