ASCE Mid-Pacific Conference 2008
by
Shauna England and Aaron Malatesta

The American Society of Civil Engineers, Mid-Pacific Regional Conference concrete canoe competition brought together six regional schools: UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Sacramento State, San Jose State, UNR, and Chico.  It was a fierce two-day competition –  one day racing and evaluating the canoes at Lake Natomas, in Sacramento, and the other showing off displays and giving presentations on the UC Davis campus.

The concrete canoe competition is evaluated in four categories: races, presentation, design paper, and final product.  And although Chico improved upon last year in all aspects of the competition, they fell short of the final three.

“Turbulence,” Chico's canoe, was a yearlong endeavor starting in August with fundraising, recruitment, and design while construction and pouring started in the spring semester. This year's team included nine members who each dedicated their time to design, construct, and race the canoe.  Led by Sean Jackson and Shauna England the design for this year’s concrete mixture was the lightest in the competition, with a density less than that of water, which enabled the canoe to float and navigate successfully throughout the races.

From this year's experience at Mid-Pac and with next year's competition quickly approaching, the team hopes to sweep the competition and move onto Nationals in 2009.

The 2008 Chico State Steel Bridge Team placed third overall in the Mid-Pac competition.  The team began the design of their bridge in the fall semester of 2007 and the construction process started in March. Aaron Malatesta, a senior civil engineering student and the team's captain, had nothing but good things to say about the team's performance, “The collaborative effort of all the individuals who helped make the bridge possible led to an amazing performance in an extremely competitive group.”

Each team's bridge was judged based on their timed construction of the bridge, the strength of the bridge, and it's weight.  Of the seven universities competing, Chico finished third in each area.  The team has lots of new ideas for next year's bridge and they look forward to the 2009 Mid-Pac competition in Reno.

Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest

The ASCE student chapter of Chico State held its first Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition on May 10th. The Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition promoted fundamentals of civil engineering by requiring high school students to build the best “engineered bridge.” The competition was held in the Langdon structures lab where students from Pleasant Valley High school faced off against one another to see whose bridge was supreme. The overall best bridge held over 300 lbs before collapsing. The event was judged by officers of the ASCE student chapter along with members of the Professional ASCE Feather River Branch. After the competition ASCE held a barbeque for all the attendants and handed out special event t shirts.

The Chico State SEAOCC Student Chapter hosted and won the annual Structures Competition on November 10, 2007, defeating the rival entry from UOP. Our student group, assisted by Dr. Curt Haselton and Mr. Charlie Roberts, is looking to achieve similar success this spring in the steel bridge competition. This looks to be a banner year, since Chico's ASCE Student Chapter is also on-track for a strong entry in the concrete canoe competition, with assistance from Mr. Jim Scolaro and Dr. Steffen Mehl. Mid-Pac will be hosted by U.C., Davis this April.
