340 Fall 2005
Midterm 1 grades
As of October 14

There will be 3 exams.  Each will be weighted equally.

The exam with answers is posted on the  exams page.

You have one week (until 10/24/05) to contest the grading of this exam. If you are unclear about how I graded a problem, or feel the test or grading was unfair, please contact me.  If you do not talk to me or send me email within that week, I will assume that you think I have done a fair and accurate job of grading your exam and you will lose your right to contest the grade.

Altering Graded Exam Policy

When students come to me with a grading error on an exam, I always wonder if I made a mistake or if the student altered the exam after I graded it.  Both possibilities are not very comfortable; I don't want to think I made mistakes, and I don't want to think students altered the exam.

I have a solution to this problem.  I copy a sampling of graded exams before I return them to students.  If a student brings an exam to me, it is one of the exams I copied, and the exam has been altered, the student receives an F in the course and will be reported to academic affairs.

Think about your odds of getting caught before you alter an exam.  I won't tell you how many exams I copy, but assume I copy 10% (that's only 3-5 exams in the average class), you have a 1 in 10 chance of failing the course because you are trying to raise your exam grade few percent.  The potential bad outcome significantly outweighs the potential good outcome.

** The letter grades in the spreadsheet below are approximate letter grades.  At the end of the semester I will assign a single letter grade for all of your exams, and a single letter grade for all of your projects.  Your course grade will be the weighted average of these two letter grades (60% for tests 40% for assignments). For example, if you get a C on exams and an A- on projects, your final letter grade would be (2.0 * .6 + 3.7 * .4) = 2.7 (B-),
