McLeod Institute of Simulation Sciences

College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology

California State University, Chico, CA 95929-0003, U.S.A

Preamble

The McLeod Institute of Simulation Sciences was established in 1986 at California University, Chico to be a center of excellence in computer modellling and simulation as a collaborative effort between the University and the Society for Computer Simulation International (SCS). In creating the Institute, the University recognized a unique opportunity to develop a widely-recognized center engaging in state-of-the-art simulation research and educational activities by virtue of a critical mass of experienced faculty available to contribute to this effort. The Institute provides a mechanism through which faculty from various disciplines and their students and associates can bring their talents to bear in the general area of computer simulation or can seek help with the application of simulation to new areas. The Institute is named to honor Mr. John McLeod, P.E., the founder of SCS, and the first editor of the journal Simulation.

Following the establishment of the Institute at California State University, Chico, further centers of the McLeod Institute have been established at Universities throughout the world under the auspices of SCS. There are currently 20 MISS Centers around the world.

Purposes and Activities

The purposes of the McLeod Institute of Simulation Sciences are to:

  1. encourage and coordinate research in computer modelling and simulation.

  2. enhance opportunities for undergraduate and graduate research and training.

  3. stimulate the development, use, and evaluation of new instructional techniques and materials which make use of simulation.

Activities include:

  1. Engaging in basic and applied research by faculty, students, and associates concentrated in the areas of design, implementation, application, and evaluation of computer simulation tools and techniques.

  2. Establishing and maintaining liaison with researchers elsewhere, especially in the MISS network, with the Society for Computer Simulation International (SCS) and other appropriate professional, industrial, and student organizations.

  3. Producing and commissioning research reports relating to simulation methodology and applications.

  4. Conducting competitions to distribute grants from SCSI or elsewhere to support student research in computer modelling simulation.

  5. Securing external funds to provide support for individual projects and general support for the operation of the Institute.

  6. Preparing and presenting workshops, seminars, symposia, on modelling and simulation and aimed at diverse audiences including researchers in academia and industry, teachers, students, and others.

  7. Publicizing and supervising generally the availability and use of John McLeod's collection of personal papers and books, which may be housed permanently in the Meriam Library at CSU, Chico.

  8. Facilitating and hosting visiting scholars and encouraging and assisting arrangements for exchanges for CSU, Chico, faculty with industry and other universities.

  9. Encouraging and facilitating cross-disciplinary research in computer simulation.

  10. Encouraging and assisting in the creation, production, and distribution of publications, presentations, and software for computer modelling and simulation.

  11. Encouraging and facilitating the use of simulation techniques and materials in courses throughout the University and elsewhere.

Goals and Resources

The original goal was to create a self-supporting, ongoing Institute supported in a variety of ways (funds, equipment, visiting personnel) by industry and state and federal contributions. Faculty and student efforts are supported by grants and contracts supporting research and training projects. The intent is to involve as many faculty and students as can be reasonably accommodated based on the space, equipment, and funds available. As time passes, it is expected that faculty and students will turn over as projects end and new ones begin so that the Institute offers a dynamic vehicle through which research and training is continually conducted on the leading edge of computer modelling and simulation.

Activities of the Institute

Research in the following areas of primary initial interest and expertise is under development:
  • Applications of the High level Architecture (HLA)
  • Intelligent software environments for simulation.
  • Programming languages for simulation (both continuous and discrete).
  • Techniques for evaluating the performance of computer simulation systems.
  • High-speed real-time simulation systems.
  • The development of bibliographies of computer simulation.
  • The development of software for engineering education.
  • Simulation of optical interconnections for computing systems.
